Sept-Iles has a seasonal tourist office , 516 rue Arnaud (mid-June to Aug daily 9am-6pm) down by the waterfront in the Parc du Vieux-Quai, and another on the outskirts of town at 1401 boul Laure (mid-June to mid-Sept daily 8.30am-8.30pm; mid-Sept to mid-June Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm). Rent bicycles from Rioux Velo Plein Air, 391 ave Gamache (tel 968-8356).

The Le Tangon   youth hostel , 555 rue Cartier (tel 962-8180 or 1-800/461-8585; June-Sept; up to $40), is a cheap, family-run place with breakfast for $3.50; camping is allowed in the grounds for $8. Alternatively, try the luxurious Hotel Gouverneur Sept-Iles , 666 boul Laure (tel 962-7071 or 1-888/910-1111; $80-100) or the Hotel Sept-Iles , 451 ave Arnaud (tel 962-2581 or 1-800/463-1753; $60-80) on the waterfront. For budgets in between, the town's B&Bs are more attractive than the motels along the highway - Gite Les Tournesols , 388 rue Evangeline (tel 968-1910; $40-60) is nearest the quay. The area's two campsites lie 27km to the east, off Hwy 138 next to the salmon-filled Riviere Moisie: Camping Laurent-Val (tel 927-2899; $13) and Camping de la ZEC de la riviere Moisie (tel 927-2021; $10).

For eating , Sept-Iles has great seafood restaurants such as the rather expensive Chez Omer , 372 ave Brochu. Get cheaper seafood, pizza and pasta (as well as a few rounds of drinks ) at nearby Cafe du Port at no. 495, while the Pub St-Marc further down the road at no. 588 is a surprisingly stylish bar serving microbrews, with a more expensive restaurant upstairs. Montagnais specialties are pricey but well-prepared at Chez Jonathan , in the Musee Shaputuan at the west end of town.

The bus station, 126 rue Monseigneur-Blanche (tel 962-2126), has buses east to Havre-St-Pierre; the QNS&L train station, with 2-3 trains a week to Labrador City ($100 return ) and Schefferville ($137 return), is on rue Retty at the east end of town; information and tickets are available from Vacances Inter (tel 962-9411). The Nordik Express supply ship from Rimouski leaves Sept-Iles every Wednesday morning at 6am, arriving at Port-Menier on the Ile d'Anticosti ($45.45; $63.12 with meals) that afternoon and Havre-St-Pierre ($63.82; $97.22 with meals) in the evening, before continuing along the Basse Cote-Nord to Blanc-Sablon near the Labrador border. It does not stop in Sept-Iles on the return trip.
