The Min River , which roughly delineates the southern border of Fuzhou, flows east-west through the city. The five-kilometre-long main north-south axis, called Wusi Lu in the north and Wuyi Lu farther south, cuts right through the city, intersecting with Dong Jie, and farther south with Gutian Lu, marking the centre of the city at Wuyi Square . The main shopping areas are Bayiqi Lu (parallel with Wuyi Lu), the area around Gutian Lu, and one more much farther south, almost at the river on Rongcheng Gujie.

The train station is in the far northeast of town; bus #51 runs straight down Wusi/Wuyi Lu to the Min River from here, while bus #20 runs down Bayiqi Lu. There are a number of bus stations around town, including the North station a few minutes' walk south of the train station, and the South station at the junction of Guohuo Lu and Wuyi Lu. It's hard, however, to be certain where you'll be dropped, as both stations are served by buses from just about everywhere in neighbouring provinces. There is also a smaller bus station on Guangda Lu, just north of Guohuo Lu - Chating bus station - which serves local destinations around Fuzhou.

If you're arriving in Fuzhou by coastal boat you'll be dropped at the Mawei boat terminal several kilometres to the southeast of the city. This is connected to town by local trains and, more conveniently, by bus #37 to the Chating bus station, as well as some minibuses from Wuyi Square. Haitian airport is 50km south of the city, from where an airport bus (?18) runs to the CAAC office (8am-8pm; tel 0591/3345988) on Wuyi Lu, a few minutes north of Guohuo Lu. For booking tours (useful for Wuyi Shan), approach CITS (tel 0591/7552052) or CTS (tel 0591/7556304), both just north of the Huaqiao Hotel on Wusi Lu.
