Bike rental Only residents are allowed to ride bikes in Shanghai's crowded streets. If you have a bike you won't be stopped, but there is nowhere for visitors to rent them.

Bookshops The Foreign Language Bookstore, 390 Fuzhou Lu, is by far the best place to check in the city, as it has a good selection of modern and classic English-language fiction and non-fiction, as well as a selection of specialist translated Chinese literature around the corner at 201 Shandong Zhong Lu (open daily 9am-5.30pm). Most other places along Fuzhou Lu (nicknamed "Book Street" for its multitude of bookstores) have very limited English sections. Western paperbacks and periodicals can be found at all major hotels and at the Friendship Store.

Football The Shanghai Shenhua Club were the champions of China in 1996 and the runners-up from 1997 to 1999. During the football season (winter), you might try seeing a game in the gleaming new 35,000 seat Hongkou Football Stadium, in the north of town. Enquire at CITS or CTS for details.

Hospitals A number of the city's hospitals have special clinics for foreigners, including the Huadong Hospital at 121 Yan'an Xi Lu (tel 62483180) and the 19th floor of the Hua Shan Hospital at 12 Wu Lu Mu Qi Lu (tel 62489999). Top notch medical care is at World Link Medical and Dental Centres (tel 62797688) in Suite 203 of the Portman Centre, but they are pricey at ?700 per consultation. World Link also has an office in Hongqiao near the airport at 788 Hong Xu Lu (tel 6405 5788).

Internet The Internet Cafe at 400 Jinling Dong Lu, just west of Henan Lu, has ?15 an hour service with decent linkup time. The cheapest Internet hook-up is at the Shanghai Library at 1555 Huaihai Zhong Lu (open 8.30am-5pm; must show some sort of ID). 3C&T, at 238 Shan Xi Nan Lu, also has inexpensive, quick Internet service. The Clintons swung by here on their 1998 visit. There are several places dotted around Fudan University and other college campuses; ask local students for specifics as new places are always opening.

Post office There are post office branches all over the city. The main office is at 1761 Sichuan Lu, just north of and overlooking Suzhou Creek. A stately fin-de-siecle Art-Deco edifice, the post office offers a very efficient parcel service; the express option can send packages to England or the USA within two days.

Poste restante arrives at the Bei Suzhou Lu office across the street - each separate item is recorded on a little slip of cardboard in a display case near the entrance. Most hotels, including the Pujiang, also accept and hold mail. (PO and poste restante open daily 9am-5pm). Branches dot the city, with convenient locations along Nanjing Dong Lu, Huaihai Zhong Lu, the Portman Centre, and near the Huangpu River ferry jetties at the corner of Jinling Dong Lu and Sichuan Bei Lu.

PSB 210 Hankou Lu, near the corner of Henan Zhong Lu. For visa extensions go next door to 222 Hankou Lu.

Telephones International calls are most easily and cheaply made with phone cards that can be bought and used in hotels. Otherwise they can be made from the second floor of the main post office at 1761 Sichuan Bei Lu, or at the China Telecom office 3 stores down from the north building of the Peace Hotel on 30 Nanjing Dong Lu (open 24hr). A large, English-speaking staff can deal with every request. The telephone code for Shanghai is 021.

Tourist Information For advice in English, call the tourist hotline at tel 62520000 (daily 8am-10pm). At Hongqiao, dial tel 62688899 ext 56750 (daily 10am-9.30pm). At the north entrance of the Renmin Square metro station, there is a tourist kiosk with free English maps, brochures, and advice. Excellent English spoken by an elderly gentleman who is a gold mine for information on Shanghai's recent history and architectural wonders.

Travel agents CITS has a helpful office several stores down from the north building of the Peace Hotel at 66 Nanjing Dong Lu (tel 63233384, fax 63290295), providing travel and entertainment tickets, with a small commission added on. There's another CITS branch at 1277 Beijing Xi Lu (tel 62898899), as well as a ticket office (but not travel agency) just off the Bund at 2 Jinling Dong Lu (all branches daily 8.30am-11.30am & 1-4.45pm), opposite the boat ticket office. Most if not all hotels have travel agencies offering the same services.
