The local food is one of Xiamen's assets, with plenty of fresh fish and seafood, particularly oysters, crabs and prawns, and a liberal use of peanuts . A good place to try the town's peanut snacks is the Huangzehe Huashengtang Dian ( Sweet Peanut Shop) on Zhongshan Lu, south side, a few minutes west of Siming Lu. Sweet peanut soup is served with everything, and there are also excellent steamed buns stuffed with peanut. Seafood restaurants abound on Gulangyu, and in the lanes around the Lujiang and Donghai hotels; inside the Lujiang itself, you can have excellent dim sum breakfasts or lunches on the lower floor, while upstairs there's a very pleasant rooftop restaurant/cafe overlooking the sea. The Holiday Inn serves an evening buffet dinner which is relatively inexpensive, if unexciting, at ?125 per head. The vegetarian restaurant at Nanputuo Si is excellent, but expensive: if you can't read the Chinese menu at the "Meal Booking Office", go for one of the set meals at ?30-50 a person - just indicate to the office staff how much you want to pay.
