San JosAŠ's ICT office (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 223-1733, fax 223-5452, www.tourism-costarica.com ), underneath the Plaza de la Cultura at C 5, Av 0/2, has free maps, leaflets and folders in which you can check out photos of hotels before you book, and free leaflets detailing the national bus schedule. They also hand out the free monthly Culture Calendar , which details concerts and festivals throughout the country.

In addition, the Sistema Nacional de Areas de ConservaciA?n (National System of Conservation Areas), or SINAC , runs a free phone line giving information in English and Spanish about Costa Rica's national parks : call 192 (Mon-Fri 8am-5.30pm). They can provide information on individual parks, particularly about transport and camping facilities. Basic information about opening hours, entrance tariffs and an explanation of the national parks system can be found at www.minae.go.cr/areas/sinac.htm . In San JosAŠ you can get information, buy entrance tickets and make reservations for park shelters at the FundaciA?n de Parques Nacionales office, Av 15, C 23/25, Barrio Escalante (tel 257-2239, fax 222-4732, azucena@ns.minae.go.cr ).
