Both ferry and bus terminals are located in the port suburb of Gruz, 3km west of the old town. The main western entrance to the old town, the Pile Gate, is a thirty-minute slog along ul Ante Starcevica and you'd be better off catching a bus - #1a and #3 from the ferry terminal, #1a, #3 or #6 from behind the bus station. Flat-fare tickets for local buses are bought from the driver (exact change only; 10kn) or from newspaper kiosks (7kn). Dubrovnik's airport is situated some 20km south of the city, close to the resort town of Cavtat; Croatia Airways buses meet all arrivals and run to the town bus station, returning from there ninety minutes before each departure.

Plans are afoot for a couple of official tourist offices in the old town. In the meantime you'll have to make do with the unimpressive, privately-run information office just inside the Pile Gate (summer daily 9am-10pm; winter Mon-Sat 8am-7.30pm; tel 020/426-354); as well as selling city maps they can book private rooms . There are numerous other accommodation agencies, too: Gulliver, Obala Stjepana Radica 32 (tel 020/419-109 , www.gulliver.hr ) is conveniently located opposite the ferry terminal; and Atlas has an office downhill from the Pile Gate at Svetog Djurdja 1 (tel 020/442-585, atlas-pile@atlas.tel.hr ), and another just off Luza square in the old town at Lucarica 1 (tel 020/442-591). You'll probably be approached by a scrum of landladies offering rooms at both the bus station and the ferry terminal - they're worth considering if you arrive late at night, and will probably work out cheaper than those obtained through agencies. There's a basic, well-run HI hostel at bana Jelacica 15/17 (tel 020/423-241; A?5-10/$8-16/a?¬9-18) - head up Ante Starcevica from the bus station and turn uphill to the right after five minutes. There's a dearth of affordable hotels near the old town, and you're restricted to staying a walk or bus ride away. Lero , 1.5km west of Pile Gate at Iva Vojnovica 14 (tel 020/332-122, hotel-lero@du.tel.hr ; A?20-25/$32-40/a?¬36-45), has modern en suites with TV; while Petka , Obala Stjepan Radica 38 (020/418-008; A?15-20/$24-32/a?¬27-36), has smaller rooms but the advantage of being opposite the ferry terminal. Most of the big package hotels are on the Lapad peninsula 5km west of the Pile Gate (bus #6). Zagreb , Setaliste Kralja Zvonimira 27 (tel 020/436-146; A?15-20/$24-32/a?¬27-36), is a pleasant, turn-of-the-century building near Lapad beach; the nearby Vis , Masarykov Put 4 (April-Nov tel 020/437-303; A?20-25/$32-40/a?¬36-45), is a modern place with simple en suites and a generous stretch of private beach. The free, monthly Dubrovnik Riviera , available from hotels and the tourist office, is a tremendous little pocket guide incorporating bus and ferry timetables and comprehensive listings of events for that month.
