The Roskilde Festival

Held over four days and nights during the last weekend of June, and attracting crowds of 80,000 people from all over Europe, the Roskilde Festival ( www.roskilde-festival.dk ) is one of Europe's largest rock events. When the festival began in the 1970s the good burghers of Roskilde were not particularly amused, but nowadays the festival is seen as a massive boost to the local economy, while all profits go to community projects.

The Roskilde Festival's darkest moment came on June 30, 2000, when nine young people died as a result of a crowd surge during a performance by US rock band Pearl Jam. The whole incident is currently under police investigation, though organizers are confident that the festival will continue in future years and are currently looking into dozens of recommendations to improve safety - something they will have to do if they are to regain their status as one of the best festivals in Europe. Tickets for the entire four days of the festival with a place in the campsite cost about 900kr; tickets are sometimes sold for the Sunday only (about 300kr) - they're available via Billetnet.
