The tourist office (daily: winter 9am-3pm & 6-8pm; summer 9am-3pm & 7-9pm; Ramadan 10am-2pm; tel 097/312-811) is housed in a domed Nubian-style building outside the station. The erudite and charming Shukri Sa'ad and Hakeem Hussein can answer just about any question, and will recommend good felucca captains, if asked beforehand - they won't pass judgement if you've already made a deal. They also provide current private taxi rates. Shukri is worth talking to about anything, having read and travelled widely, whilst remaining a real Nubian.

The tourist police (tel 097/316-436) are based near the Corniche, with a branch in the train station; both are open round the clock. The Aswan Governorate's Police Department occupies a grand modern tower on the Corniche, fronted by machine-gunners and a notice welcoming tourists to the building, which also contains the passport office. There is another, colonial-style police station on Sharia Abtal el-Tahrir.
