fiogf49gjkf0d Once you've found somewhere to stay, it's a good idea to visit the
tourist office
(daily 8am-8pm; tel 095/372-215 or 373-294) south of Luxor Temple to discover the latest official rates for taxis,
caleches,
feluccas or any other service you might be interested in. Confusingly, there are two offices next door to each other; you want to go into the one signposted "Egyptian Tourist Authority", not "Luxor City Information". There's also a branch at the airport (tel 095/372-306), open 24 hours during winter and another at the train station (generally open daily 8am-6pm). Finally, there's the
Luxor Visitors' Centre
(daily 9am-1pm & 7-10pm), in the riverside mall near the temple, which shows films, sells books and sponsors seminars about Luxor.
The
tourist police
's "front" office lies across the way from the tourist office, while their headquarters is upstairs, around the back of the building (tel 095/373-845; 24hr). They also have a branch in the station (daily 8am-11pm; tel 095/372-120). The regular
police
(tel 095/382-006) are based off Sharia el-Karnak, north of Luxor Temple, and supplemented on the streets by a host of plainclothes agents known as the "
galabiyya
police". Whatever your problem, it's always best to go to the tourist police first.
