diving centres
are now firmly attached to hotels, but most are happy to take non-guests for courses and daily boat diving. Before signing up for anything, ask where you'll be doing your training; the water in Sharm's bay is a lot dirtier than in Na'ama Bay. You're better off looking there or at the dive centres around Ras Umm Sidd where you will find the long-established African Divers, Rasta Divers and more recent arrivals Waterland at
Royal Paradise Hotel.
Dive Africa, a five-star PADI centre, recently moved to
Beach Albatros
and claims to be very eco-friendly. Prices for most dive trips and courses mirror those offered by dive centres in Na'ama.
In case of
diving emergencies
, contact the Hyperbaric Medical Centre near the Sharm el-Sheikh marina (tel 069/660-992, mobile 012/212-4292); there is also a new decompression facility at the International Hospital in Hay el-Nur (tel 069/600-893).
