A new development just south of Taba covering 4.5 million square metres of land and with 5km of beach, Taba Heights is set to change the topography of the Sinai when it becomes fully operational in late 2000. Part of the so-called "Red Sea Riviera", this huge resort complex is based around a "village", which features a casino, watersports and diving centre, restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and bazaars and a medical clinic. If successful, it will draw thousands of tourists to this area of Sinai for the first time, using the Taba international airport instead of the airport in Sharm el-Sheikh.
