fiogf49gjkf0d Eating
in Helsinki, as in the rest of Finland, isn't cheap, but there is a lot of choice, and, with planning, a number of ways to stretch funds - many places offer good-value lunchtime deals, and there are plenty of affordable ethnic restaurants and fastfood
grillis
. At the end of EtelA¤esplanadi the
Old Market Hall
(Kauppahalli; Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 8am-3pm) is good for snacks and reindeer kebabs. Helsinki has several
student mensas
, two of which are centrally located at Aleksanterinkatu 5 and Yliopistonkatu 3. One or the other will be open in summer; both will be open during term time.
Drinking
can be enjoyed in the city's many pub-like restaurants; on Fridays and Saturdays it's best to arrive as early as possible to get a seat without having to queue. Most drinking dives also serve food, although the grub is seldom at its best in the evening. If you want a drink but are hard-up, self-service ALKO shops are located at Fabianinkatu 9-11 and Kaivokatu 10.
