BrianA§on's tourist office is in the place du Temple close to the Porte Pignerol gateway (Mon-Sat 8.30am-noon & 1.30-6.30pm, Sun 10am-12.30pm & 2.30-6pm; tel 04.92.21.08.50, www.briancon.com ). The mountain guides office is in Parc Chancel (tel 04.92.20.15.73), and the Maison du Parc National des A?crins is in place MA©decin-GA©nA©ral-Blanchard (tel 04.92.21.42.15, ecrins.brianA§onnais@espaces-naturels.fr ). There are a number of inexpensive hotels in BrianA§on, among which Pension des Remparts , in the citadel itself, 14 av Vauban (tel 04.92.21.08.73; 160-220F/a?¬24-34; closed Nov) is the best. The nearby HA?tel aux Trois Chamois , on the Champ de Mars, is another good choice (tel 04.92.21.02.29, fax 04.92.23.45.89; 220-300F/a?¬34-46), while down in the new town, closer to the station and services, Auberge le Mont Prorel (tel 04.92.20.22.88, fax 04.92.21.27.76; 160-220F/a?¬24-34) is a more basic place which attracts a youthful clientele. There's also a very nice hostel at Le Bez (Serre-Chevalier) (tel 04.92.24.74.54, fax 04.92.24.83.39, serre-chevalier@fuaj.org ), 8km north on the main Grenoble road - hitchable and also served by local buses. The nearest campsite is Camping des 5 VallA©es at St-Blaise (tel 04.92.21.06.27), 2km from town. There are a number of gA®tes d'A©tape , including the cosy Le Petit Phoque , 2km along the MontgenA?vre road at Le Fontenil (tel 03.92.20.07.27).

As for eating , the old town has a number of good, affordable options. It's full of wonderful Italian cafA©s, with delicious cakes and pizzas, and there are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants such as Les Templiers and Le Petit Bouchon , both of which have patios on the place du Temple (beside the tourist office) and solid, cheap menus (from 65F/a?¬9.91 and 75F/a?¬11.44 respectively). Another good choice is Le Pied de la Gargouille , 64 Grande-Rue (closed Wed), where meats are roasted over the open fire in the centre of the dining room (menus from 75F/a?¬11.44).
