Several cross-Channel ferry companies still sail into Cherbourg's gare maritime , just east of the town centre (tel 02.33.44.20.13). Services from Portsmouth , including the new Superstar Express, which takes a mere 2hr 45min for the crossing, are operated by P&O (5-6 daily; tel 08.03.01.30.13, www.poef.com ), and those from Poole by Brittany Ferries (1-2 daily; 4hr 15min; tel 08.03.82.88.28, www.brittany-ferries.com ) - Cherbourg is twinned with Poole, hence the British red telephone kiosk on quai de Caligny. Irish Ferries also sail to Cherbourg, from Rosslare (2-4 weekly; tel 02.33.23.44.44).

Cherbourg's tourist office is at 2 quai Alexandre III (June-Aug Mon-Sat 9am-6.30pm; rest of year Mon 1.30-6pm, Tues-Fri 9am-noon & 1.30-6pm, Sat 9am-noon; tel 02.33.93.52.02, www.cherbourg-channel.tm.fr ). The gare SNCF , on avenue FranA§ois-Miller/place Jean-JaurA?s, is served by regular trains to Paris, Bayeux and Caen. Buses to Coutances (tel 02.33.98.13.38) and St-LA?, Valognes and Barfleur (tel 02.33.44.32.22) run from the gare routiA?re opposite.
