The most promising area to look for restaurants in Dieppe is along the quai Henri IV, which makes a lovely place to stroll and compare menus of a summer's evening. The beach itself holds no formal restaurants, but it does have a couple of open-air cafA©s selling mussels, salads and so on, and plenty of crA?pe stands. Four of the town's best restaurants are listed below.

As well as the daily spectacle of the fish on sale in the fishing port , there's an all-day open-air market in the place Nationale and Grande Rue on Saturday. The largest of several hypermarkets in the area is Auchan (Mon-Sat 8.30am-10pm), out of town at the Centre Commercial du BelvA©dA?re on the route de Rouen (RN 27), and reached by free courtesy buses from the tourist office.

Les A?camias , 129 quai Henri IV (tel 02.35.84.67.67). Small, friendly traditional French restaurant, at the quieter, seaward end of the main quay. Each of its two dining rooms serves the same menu, with a 75F/a?¬11.43 option that includes moules mariniA?res and stuffed shellfish; they also offer skate with capers. Closed Mon (except in Aug), and Sun evening in winter.

Le Festival , 11 quai Henri IV (tel 02.35.40.24.29). Quick-fire brasserie at the busiest end of the quayside that delivers fishy goods at top speed without skimping on quality. Moules frites is a mere 40F/a?¬6.10; on the 110F/a?¬16.77 menu you can get half a lobster, and there's fruits de mer literally by the boatload - it comes in blue china ships.

La Marmite Dieppoise , 8 rue St-Jean (tel 02.35.84.24.26). Busy little rustic restaurant near St-Jacques church, where the speciality is marmite Dieppoise (seafood pot, with shellfish and white fish). Dinner menus start at 150F/a?¬22.87. Closed Sun evening, Mon, and Thurs evening out of season.

Le Newhaven , 53 quai Henri IV (tel 02.35.84.89.72). Reliable seafood specialist, at the slightly quieter end of the quayside, serving good menus from 70F/a?¬10.67. The 115F/a?¬17.53 menu of Dieppe specialities includes fish livers and squid; if you go A  la carte, 115F/a?¬17.53 will also buy you a choucroute de la mer . Closed Sun evening in winter.
