To find out what's on , pick up the thrice-weekly Sortir from the tourist office, with theatre, cinema and mainstream and classical music listings. For nightlife , head for the rue St-Nicolas: many bars line the streets, some offering live music and most with a lively atmosphere. An older crowd heads for rue des Templiers, where you'll find the Piano Pub , the Mayflower , the St-James and the Academie de la Biere . Nightclubs worth checking out include L'Oxford , plage de la Concurrence, and Le Triolet , 8 rue des Carmes.

La Rochelle is also host to the major festival of French-language music, Les Francofolies, in mid-July, which features musicians from overseas as well as France and attracts the best part of 100,000 fans to the city.
