in Le Havre are worth making a fuss about, except perhaps for some in the suburb of
Ste-Adresse
. There are, however, lots of bars, cafA©s and brasseries around the
gare SNCF
, and all sorts of crA?peries and ethnic alternatives - North African, South American, Caribbean - in the back streets of the St-FranA§ois district.
If you're shopping for food to take home, you could try the central market , just west of place Gambetta and ideal for fresh produce, or two Auchan hypermarkets (both open Mon-Sat 8.30am-10pm): the larger, at the Mont Gaillard Centre Commercial, is reached by following cours de la RA©publique beyond the gare SNCF , through the tunnel; the other, at Montivilliers, is signposted off the Tancarville road. L'HuitriA?re , 12 quai Michel FA©rA© (tel 02.35.21.24.16). Seafood specialists in the St-FranA§ois quarter, facing the rotating bridge of the port. Even the simplest 92F/a?¬14.03 assiette includes clams, shrimps and langoustines; the two-person 750F/a?¬114.34 Abondance menu has to be seen to be believed. First-rate seafood restaurant close to the ferry terminal in the old town, serving a reliable 125F/a?¬19.06 weekday lunch menu and a changing, more adventurous 155F/a?¬23.63 dinner option. Old-fashioned wood-panelled bistro in the St-FranA§ois quarter, where the conventional menus from 85F/a?¬12.96 feature dishes such as fish stewed in cider, and an express menu guarantees service within 20min.
