tourist office
in Morlaix is almost under the viaduct in place des Otages (mid-June to mid-Sept Mon & Sat 10am-noon & 2-6pm, Tues-Fri 10am-noon & 2-7pm, Sun 10.30am-12.30pm; rest of year Tues-Sat 9am-noon & 2-6pm; tel 02.98.62.14.94). All
buses
conveniently depart from place Cornic, right under the viaduct, but the
gare SNCF
is on rue Armand-Rousseau, high above the town at the western end of the viaduct. To reach it on foot, you have to climb the steep steps of Venelle de la Roche.
On the whole Morlaix's
hotels
are fairly uninspiring, but worth a try is the
de l'Europe
, 1 rue d'Aiguillon (tel 02.98.62.11.99, fax 02.98.88.83.38;
www.hotel-europe-com.fr
; 300-400F/a?¬46-61), an eccentric old place, but very central, with modern and well-equipped rooms - and a separate restaurant downstairs
, which is superb. Less expensive options include
Greenwood CafA© HA?tel
, 25 place St-Martin (tel 02.98.88.03.29; 160-220F/a?¬24-34), with reasonable-value en-suite rooms above an American-themed bar, close to the
gare SNCF; Le Roy d'Ys
, 8 place des Jacobins (tel 02.98.63.30.55; 160-220F/a?¬24-34; closed Nov), a small hotel across the square from the town museum (the cheapest rooms do not have their own showers; guests have to pay 15F/a?¬2.29 extra to use shared showers); and the
HA?tel-Restaurant le St-MA©laine
, 75-77 rue Ange-de-Guernisac (tel 02.98.88.08.79; under 160F/a?¬24), a good-value but dull family hotel, with a restaurant (closed Sun & two weeks in May). There's also a
hostel
at 3 route de Paris (tel 02.98.88.13.63), 1km from the town centre; take the KernA©gues bus to rue de Paris or place Traoulan, and it's just off to the left
The best hunting ground for
restaurants
in Morlaix is to be found between St-Melaine church and place des Jacobins. Try
Brasserie Le Lof
, 1 rue d'Aiguillon (tel 02.98.88.81.15), a characterful split-level brasserie below the central
HA?tel de l'Europe
, serving imaginative gourmet menus from 85F/a?¬12.96 - the bizarre
kig ha farz
, a combination of seafood stew and pancake, is a regular feature. Alternatives include the
BrocA©liande
, 5 rue des Bouchers (tel 02.98.88.73.78; closed Tues; menu 125F/a?¬19.06), in the southeast of town, beyond the place des Halles and St-Mathieu church, which offers elegant evening-only dining in a
fin-de-siA?cle
atmosphere; and
La MarA©e Bleue
, 3 rampe Ste-MA©laine (tel 02.98.63.24.21; closed Sun evening & Mon Sept-June), a well-respected seafood restaurant, a minute's walk up from the tourist office - the 80F/a?¬12.20 menu is a bit limited, but 165F/a?¬25.15 ensures you a superb
assiette de fruits de mer
, and 235F/a?¬35.83 buys a five-course feast.
