The gare SNCF and gare routiA?re are on rue du Chemin-de-Fer. The tourist office , in the foyer of the Palais Ducal (daily 9.30am-12.30pm & 2.30-6pm; tel 03.86.68.46.00, www.ville-nevers.fr ), provides maps and information on events in the summer music festival. Bike rental is available from Belair, 31bis rue de la PrA©fecture.

There are plenty of hotels , of which the best is the BeausA©jour at 5 rue St-Gildard (tel 03.86.61.20.84, fax 03.86.59.15.37; 160-220F/a?¬24-34), only ten minutes' walk from the station. HA?tel Thermidor , 14 rue Claude-Tillier (tel 03.86.57.15.47; 160-220F/a?¬24-34), reached by turning left out of the station and right after Bar des Messages , is also good value and quiet. The municipal campsite (tel 03.86.37.56.52) is just over the bridge on the other side of the Loire, with the best view of the town. IMPHY , 10km from Nevers, has a hostel , Foyer du Vignot , 8 rue Jean-SouniA© (tel 03.86.90.95.20).

Avenue de-Gaulle has a few inexpensive restaurants and cafA©s , such as the superb Gambrinus , 37 av de-Gaulle (tel 03.86.57.19.48; closed Sat lunch & Sun; plats from 50F/a?¬7.62). Le Goemon , 9 rue du 14-Juillet (tel 03.86.59.54.99; closed Sun & Mon evening), is a crA?perie with good salads, and live jazz on Saturday nights, and La CrA?perie , 24 av de-Gaulle (tel 03.86.57.28.61; closed Sun lunch & Mon), has good cheap meals. For fresh, tasty food in a friendly place, try La Grignote at 7bis rue Ferdinand-Gambon near the market (tel 03.86.36.24.99; closed Mon, Tues & Wed evening). Donald's Pub , on rue FranA§ois Mitterand near the river, is a good place for a drink.
