Though the pedestrian streets west of the cathedral are unexpectedly short on places to eat, there are quite a few restaurants further east on the north side of the river, en route to the gare SNCF . Rue Aristide-Briand here is a particularly promising area, with some lively bars, and place au Beurre, north of the cathedral, is a good bet for crA?peries.

L'Ambroisie , 49 rue A?lie-FrA©ron (tel 02.98.95.00.02). Upmarket French restaurant a short climb north from the cathedral, with menus from 120F/a?¬18.29. Choice is very restricted, but you can feel safe placing yourself in the hands of the Guyon family. Closed Mon evening, except in summer.

La Cambuse , 11 rue DA©an (tel 02.98.53.06.06). Lively place, south of the river, serving inexpensive crA?pes, salads and quiche-like savoury tartes . Behind the bright-orange facade there's more orange panelling, with wooden tables and a little garden as well. Closed Sun lunch and all day Mon.

Le Capucin Gourmand , 29 rue des RA©guaires (tel 02.98.95.43.12). Gourmet French cooking, not far east of the cathedral. Menus start at 100F/a?¬15.24 and zoom on up to 360F/a?¬54.58; most offer very little choice, though all feature at least some meat dishes. Closed Mon lunch & allday Sun.

La Folle Blanche , 39 bd de KerguA©len (tel 02.98.95.76.76). Lovely Art-Deco restaurant, facing the river close to the cathedral, which serves top-value menus at 95F/a?¬14.48 and 145F/a?¬22.11 and often features live jazz at weekends. Closed Sun, plus Tues evening in winter.

La Krampouzerie , 9 rue du SallA©, on the place au Beurre (tel 02.98.95.13.08). One of the best of Quimper's many crA?peries, with some outdoor seating on the square. Most crA?pes cost around 20F/a?¬3.05, though you can get a wholewheat galette with scallops for 42F/a?¬6.40, or with seaweed for 30F/a?¬4.57. Closed Mon in winter & Sun.

La Tour d'Auvergne , 13 rue des RA©guaires (tel 02.98.95.08.70). Formal hotel dining room that offers high-quality menus from 125F/a?¬19.06 at lunchtime up to 198F/a?¬30.19 in the evening, with an emphasis on fresh local seafood. The mussels and monkfish are excellent and the baked strawberries divine. Closed Sat evening, plus Sun Oct-April.
