Most of Rennes' more interesting bars and restaurants are to be found in the streets just south of place Ste-Anne and St-Aubin church. Rues St-Michel and PenhoA«t, each with a fine assemblage of ancient wooden buildings, are the epicentre at the moment, while ethnic alternatives can be found along rue St-Malo just to the north. While you're exploring, look around the back of the excellent crA?perie at 5 place Ste-Anne, through an archway off rue Motte-Fablet, to get an extraordinary glimpse of medieval high-rise housing.

Rue Vasselot is the nearest equivalent south of the river, though if you're just looking for a quick snack, don't forget the various outlets in the Centre Colombier.

Closed Sun lunch & Tues.

La Tourniole , 37 rue Vasselot (tel 02.99.79.05.91). Lovely, very traditional small restaurant halfway between the gare SNCF and the river, offering a hearty 65F/a?¬9.91 set lunch, and dinner menus that start at 95F/a?¬14.48.
