The main
gare SNCF
, Gare Rive Droite, stands at the north end of rue Jeanne-d'Arc; it is connected to the centre by a multibillion-franc
mA©tro
system, completed in 1998, the city's pride and joy. From the train station (MA? Gare Rue Verte), the mA©tro follows the line of the rue Jeanne-d'Arc, making two stops before it resurfaces to cross the river by bridge; thereafter the tracks dip below and above ground like a roller coaster. Individual journeys cost 8F/a?¬1.22 and a book of tickets is 59F/a?¬8.99, though in truth the mA©tro is of more use to commuters than tourists. All

gare SNCF
run down rue Jeanne-d'Arc to the centre, which takes five minutes. From the fifth stop, the "ThA©A?tre des Arts" by the river, the
gare routiA?re
is one block west in rue des Charettes, tucked away behind the riverfront buildings.
Rouen's tourist office , opposite the cathedral at 25 place de la CathA©drale, stands in the sixteenth-century HA?tel des GA©nA©raux (May-Sept Mon-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 9.30am-12.30pm & 2.30-6pm; rest of year Mon-Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 10am-1pm; tel 02.32.08.32.40, www.mairie-rouen.fr ). It serves each day as the starting point for two-hour walking tours of different areas of the city, each costing 35F/a?¬5.34. For more sedate visitors, a motorized petit train makes a forty-minute loop tour from the tourist office at regular intervals (daily 10am, 11am, 2pm, 4pm & 5pm; 30F/a?¬4.57).
