Intra-muros St-Malo boasts even more restaurants than hotels, with a long crescent lining the inside of the ramparts between the Porte St-Vincent and the Grande Porte. Prices are probably higher than anywhere else in Brittany, however, especially on the open cafe terraces - the demand is inflated by day-trippers and ferry passengers having last-night blowouts. Bear in mind that most of the creperies also serve moules and similar quasi-snacks. All the restaurants listed below are in the citadelle .

Astrolabe , 8 rue des Cordiers (tel 02.99.40.36.82). Quality restaurant not far south of the Grande Porte. A full lunch costs 85F/€12.96, while in the evening you can compose your own menu from the extensive carte . 160F/€24.39 buys a superb spread, with sensational grilled langoustines and a gratin du Granny-Smith from the wide range of desserts. Serves until late. Closed all day Mon & Tues lunchtime.

Le Brick , 5 rue Jacques-Cartier (tel 02.99.40.18.88). Perhaps the best of the many seafood restaurants set into the walls near the Grande Porte, with a 75F/€11.43 menu that offers fish soup or "big size winkles" followed by skate, and more lavish options up to 185F/€28.20. Closed Mon in low season.

Creperie la Brigantine , 13 rue de Dinan (tel 02.99.56.82.82). Sweet and savoury pancakes at very reasonable prices - the seafood fillings are exceptional. An individual crepe can cost under 10F/€1.52, and there's a 58F/€8.84 full menu. Closed Tues evening & Wed in low season.

Le Chasse Maree , 4 rue Grout de St-Georges (tel 02.99.40.85.10). Nautical decor and haute cuisine , just round the corner from the post office, with a few tables out on the quiet street and more upstairs. The 87F/€13.26 menu, served until 9pm, has oysters followed by red mullet or coley; the 145F/€22.11 features scallop or duck salad to start, and a mixed fish grill or fish couscous. Closed Sun in low season, plus all Feb.

Duchesse Anne , 5-7 place Guy-la-Chambre (tel 02.99.40.85.33). The best-known of St-Malo's upmarket restaurants, situated right next to the Porte St-Vincent, which continues to work hard to keep up its reputation - and its prices. No set menus; you might manage to get a lunch for under 100F/€15, but dinner will be well over 200F/€30. Whole baked fish is the main speciality. Closed Wed, plus Sun evening in low season, and all Jan & Dec.

Restaurant Gilles , 2 rue de la Pie-qui-Boit (tel 02.99.40.97.25). Bright, modern, good-value restaurant, just off the central pedestrian axis. The basic 92F/€14.03 menu is fine, though as it consists of the " suggestion du jour " followed by the " idee du moment " you'll have to trust the chef; 132F/€20.12 brings you a duck-and pistachio sausage and a rabbit crepe with cider. Closed Wed lunchtime July & Aug, all day Wed rest of year.
