The watery and intensely cultivated scenery of the Petite Crau plain south of Avignon changes abruptly with the eruption of the
Chaine des Alpilles
, whose peaks look like the surf of a wave about to engulf the plain. At their northen foot nestles
ST-REMY
, a dreamy place whose old town is contained within a circle of boulevards no more than half a kilometre in diameter. Outside this ring, the modern town is sparingly laid out, so for once you don't have to plough your way through dense developments to reach the centre.
