There are restaurants to cover every budget in St-Tropez, as well as plenty of snack bars and takeaway outfits, particularly on rue Georges-Clemenceau and place des Lices.

Bistrot des Lices , 3 place des Lices (tel 04.94.97.29.00). Fin-de-siA?cle decor for traditional preening and excellent but expensive eats; midday menu 99F/a?¬15.10, otherwise from 300F/a?¬45.75. Closed Thurs Jan-March & mid-Oct to Dec.

CafA© des Arts , place des Lices (tel 04.94.97.02.25). The number-one brasserie on the square. Old-timers still gather in the bar at the back. Menus from 220F/a?¬33.55.

CafA© SA©nA©quier , on the port. The top quayside cafA©; horribly expensive, but sells sensational nougat (also on sale from the shop at the back).

Ghandi , 3 quai de l'Epi (tel 04.94.97.71.71). Curries and tandoori, with a good selection of fish and shellfish on the menu. Lunch menu from 95F/E 14.49 and dinner from 150F/E 22.88. Closed Wed in summer, otherwise Tues & Wed.

Glaces Alfred , rue Sibille. Ice creams made on the premises.

L'A?le aux Nattes , 3 rue du Petit-St-Jean (tel 04.94.97.44.01). Spicy creole cooking from the French Carribean. Only open for dinner, with great seafood menus from 185F/a?¬28.21 and 200F/a?¬30.50 A  la carte. Closed Jan & mid-Nov to mid-Dec.

Joseph , 1 place de l'HA?tel de Ville (tel 04.94.97.01.66) & 5 rue du CA©poun Sanmartin (tel 04.94.97.03.90). Good bouillabaisse and bourride , and great desserts; 180F/a?¬27.45 menu, A  la carte 250F/a?¬38.13 upwards.

La Patate , rue Clemenceau. Snack bar with omelettes, pasta, pain beignets and so forth.

Le Petit Charron , 6 rue des Charrons (tel 04.94.97.73.78). Tiny terrace and dining room serving beautifully cooked ProvenA§al specialities. Midday menu under 195F/a?¬29.74, otherwise from 220F/a?¬33.55. Closed Wed out of season.

Regis et Lolo , montA©e de la Citadelle (tel 04.94.97.15.53). Small, friendly bistro, usually full of exuberant youth; around 150F/a?¬22.88.

La Tarte Tropezienne , 1 rue G.-Clemenceau. PA?tisserie claiming to have invented this sponge and cream custard cake.
