Dining out in old Vannes can be an expensive experience, whether you eat in the intimate little restaurants along the rue des Halles, or down by the port. The leading venues for live music are La Route du Rhum , 7 place Stalingrad (tel 02.97.42.26.94), which puts on local rock, blues and Breton bands, and John R. O'Flaherty , at 22 rue Hoche (tel 02.97.42.40.11; closed Sun), which is more a jazz hangout. During the first week of August, the open-air Vannes Jazz Festival takes place in the Theatre de Verdure.

Breizh Caffe , 13 rue des Halles (tel 02.97.54.37.41). One of the less pricey options on this attractive cobbled street, but every bit as good as its rivals, with a strong emphasis on Breton dishes and ingredients. Weekday lunches for 68F/€10.37, traditional evening menus from 93F/€14.18. Closed Sun & Mon lunchtime in low season.

Creperie La Cave St-Gwenael , 23 rue St-Gwenael (tel 02.97.47.47.94). Atmospheric, good-value creperie in the cellar of a lovely old house, facing the cathedral. Closed Sun, Mon lunchtime & all Jan.

La Jonquiere , 9 rue des Halles (tel 02.97.54.08.34). Very central option, which manages to squeeze a few tables onto the cobbles. For 76F/€11.59 you can choose a main course plus a buffet of either hors d'oeuvres or desserts; for 99F/€15.09 you can take your pick of both; 117F/€17.84 buys a full assiette de fruits de mer .

Restaurant de Roscanvec , 17 rue des Halles (tel 02.97.47.15.96). Formal gourmet restaurant in a lovely half-timbered house in the heart of the old town. Lunch at 88F/€13.42 is a bargain, dinner menus go all the way up to 300F/€45.73. Closed Sun evening, plus Mon Sept-June.
