Aschaffenburg's Hauptbahnhof is just north of the Altstadt. The tourist office is in the Stadthalle, Schlossplatz 1 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-1pm; tel 0 60 21/39 58 00, fax 39 58 02, www.info-aschaffenburg.de ). Main cruises are run by Aschaffenburger Personenschiffahrt Sankt Martin, Ruhlandstr. 5 (tel 0 60 21/8 72 88).

Of the hotels with a central location, the lowest rates are at Central , Steingasse 5 (tel 0 60 21/2 33 11 or 2 33 92; DM80-99/a?¬40-49), Pape , WA?rzburger Str. 16 (tel 0 60 21/2 2 6 73; DM80-99/a?¬40-49), and Gasthof Goldener Karpfen , LA¶herstr. 20 (tel 0 60 21/4 43 69 70; DM80-99/a?¬40-49). Two small, highly appealling middle-range choices, both further afield, are Hofgut Fasanerie , a former wine-producing estate at Bismarckallee 1 (tel 0 60 21/3 17 30; DM125-149/a?¬63-74), and SchA¶nbusch , in the former court gardener's house at Kleine SchA¶nbuschallee 1 (tel 0 60 21/85 60; DM125-149/a?¬63-74). More upmarket options include Wilder Mann , LA¶herstr. 51 (tel 0 60 21/30 20; DM150-199/a?¬75-99), and Post , Goldbacher Str. 19-21 (tel 0 60 21/33 40; DM150-199/a?¬75-99). The youth hostel is in the southeastern outskirts at Beckerstr. 47 (tel 0 60 21/93 07 63, fax 97 06 94; DM19/a?¬9.50) and is reached by taking bus #5 or #41 to Schroberstrasse, from where it's a ten-minute walk. Camping is possible at Mainparksee (tel 0 60 21/27 82 22) and in the suburb of Mainaschaff (tel 0 60 21/27 82 22), fifteen minutes away by bus #44 from the Hauptbahnhof.

There are restaurants in all but the first two hotels listed above. Among other possibilities, Zeughaus , Bismarckallee 5, is particularly worth visiting in summer, when you can drink locally produced ciders in the shade of chestnut trees. Within Schloss Johannisburg is a recommendable wine bar-restaurant with its own vintages, Schlossweinstuben ; the pick of the traditional beer taverns is Wirtshaus Zum Fegerer , Schlossgasse 14. Klimperkasten at Rossmarkt 21 is a lively, friendly bar with regular live music, while Engelsberg at Dalbergstr. 66 is a traditional but arty pub. The Neoclassical Stadttheater , Schlossgasse 8 (tel 0 60 21/2 70 78) hosts drama and concerts .
