For its size, Bamberg has an amazingly vibrant cultural centre, especially for classical music . The Bamberger Symphoniker was actually the old Deutsches Orchester of Prague, which fled over the border at the time the Iron Curtain was going up. Now under the musical directorship of Britain's Jonathan Nott, the orchestra performs in a variety of venues, and is especially known for candle-lit concerts in the Neue Residenz. Tickets for most of the city's musical events can be obtained from the BVD Kartenservice, Lange Str. 22 (tel 09 51/9 80 82 20). The principal theatre , not surprisingly, is the E.T.A. Hoffmann-Theater, Schillerplatz 7 (tel 09 51/87 14 33); the resident company also holds an open-air season in June and July in the Alte Hofhaltung. Performances by the Marionettentheater Loose take place in a sixteen-seater puppet theatre of 1821 in the Staubsches Haus, Untere Sandstr. 30 (tel 09 51/6 76 00).

Bamberg's most colourful religious festival is Corpus Christi ( Fronleichnam ; variable date in May/June), when an open-air Mass on Domplatz is followed by a procession in which devotional statues and ecclesiastical objects are carried through the streets of the town on stretchers adorned with magnificent floral garlands. In early summer, a couple of musical festivals are held in the Neues Residenz - the Residenz Festival and the Tage Alter Musik . A wine festival, the FrA¤nkisches Weinfest , is held in Schloss GeyerswA¶rth in late June, while the FrA¤nkisches Brauereimuseum runs a beer festival, Brauerei Nostalgiefest , in early July. The main folklore event is the Strassenfest in late September.
