Berchtesgaden's
Bahnhof
and
bus station
are at the southern end of town. The regional
tourist office

). In the same building, there's an information point on Berchtesgaden Mini Bus Tours (tel 0 86 52/6 49 71), which offers a variety of English-language trips, including a detailed exploration of the nearby Nazi sites. An
information centre
on the Nationalpark Berchtesgaden is in the heart of town at Franziskanerplatz 7 (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; tel 0 86 52/6 43 43).
There are plenty of remarkably good-value guesthouses . The very friendly Haus am Hang , Gollsteinbichl 3 (tel 0 86 52/43 59; less than DM60/€30), has bedrooms with balconies offering grandstand views of the surrounding mountains. Other inexpensive possibilities are Hansererhausl , Hansererweg 8 (tel 0 86 52/25 23; less than DM60/€30), Gastehaus Alpina , Ramsauer Str. 6 (tel 0 86 52/25 17; DM60-79/€30-39), and Haus Achental , Ramsauer Str. 4 (tel 0 86 52/45 49; DM60-79/€30-39). Hotels include Watzmann , Franziskanerplatz 2 (tel 0 86 52/20 55; DM60-79/€30-39), Vier Jahreszeiten , Maximilianstr. 20 (tel 0 86 52/95 20; DM125/€63-DM299/€149), and Fischer , Konigsseer Str. 51 (tel 0 86 52/95 50; DM150/€75-DM299/€149). All these hotels have restaurants , though there are plenty of other recommendable places to eat and drink. In the centre, Neuhaus , Marktplatz 1, is a good traditional Gaststatte, while Da Noi , Kalbersteinstr. 4, is an Italian restaurant in a villa built for King Maximilian II. On the way to the Salzbergwerk, at Brauhausstr. 13, the Braustubl of the adjoining brewery, the Hofbrauhaus Berchtesgaden, serves hearty Bavarian fare.
The only official
youth hostel
is in the village of Strub, 2.5km west of Berchtesgaden on the road to Ramsau, at Gebirgsjagerstr. 52 (tel 0 86 52/9 43 70, fax 94 37 37; DM22/€11). There are several
campsites
in the region, the nearest to town being
Allweglehen
(tel 0 86 52/23 96) in Untersalzberg. Other useful information
