All the leading restaurants are in the hotels, though there are plenty of good, cheaper alternatives, as well as some extremely enticing cafAŠs . The favourite local snack is the Coburger , a long sausage given a distinctively sharp taste by being grilled over pine cones rather than the usual wood or charcoal; the stands on Marktplatz sell authentic examples. Coburg is also known for its dumplings, made according to a recipe combining the Thuringian and Franconian traditions by using both raw and cooked potatoes.

A varied programme of operas, musicals, ballet and concerts is performed at the former court theatre , a Neoclassical building of 1840 now known as the Landestheater, Schlossplatz 6 (tel 0 95 61/9 27 42, www.landestheater.coburg.de ).
