Ingolstadt's Hauptbahnof , a junction of the Munich-Nurnberg and Ulm-Regensburg lines, lies 2km south of the Altstadt, to which it's connected by buses #10, #11, #15, #16 and #44. The tourist office (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 9am-noon; tel 08 41/3 05 10 98, fax 3 05 10 99, www.ingolstadt.de ) is in the Altes Rathaus, Rathausplatz 2.

There are a couple of pensions fairly close to the Hauptbahnhof: Bauer , Holzlstr. 2 (tel 08 41/6 60 99 or 6 70 86; DM80-99/€40-49) is to the northeast; Eisinger , Dorfstr. 17a (tel 08 41/97 36 60; DM100-124/€50-62) to the southwest. In the Altstadt there are four hotels : Anker , Tranktorstr. 1 (tel 08 41/3 00 50; DM125-149/€63-74); Adler , Theresienstr. 22 (tel 08 41/1 70 98 or 3 51 07; DM125-149/€63-74); Bayerischer Hof , Munzbergstr. 12 (tel 08 41/93 40 60; DM150-199/€75-99); and Rappensberger , Harderstr. 3 (tel 08 41/31 40; DM150-199/€75-99). The youth hostel is close to the Kreuztor at Friedhofstr. 41/2 (tel 08 41/3 41 77, fax 91 01 78; DM21/€10.50). Camping facilities are available at Auwaldsee in the outskirts (tel 08 41/9 61 16 16; closed Oct-March); take bus #60.

All the hotels listed above have restaurants , though the best place to eat is Im Stadttheater , Schlosslandle 1. Also of special note is the flagship of one of the local breweries, Weissbrauhaus zum Herrnbrau , Dollstr. 3, a true old Bavarian tavern. Ingolstadt's main festival is the Burgenfest on the first or second weekend of July.
