Kulmbach's Bahnhof , which has regular direct services to both Bayreuth and Bamberg, is a few minutes' walk northwest of the Altstadt. The tourist office (May-Oct Mon-Fri 9am-1pm & 1.30-5.30pm, Sat 9.30am-1pm, Sun 11am-1pm; Nov-April Mon-Fri 9am-1pm & 1.30-5.30pm; tel 0 92 21/9 58 80, fax 95 88 44, www.stadt-kulmbach.de ) is in the Stadthalle, Sutte 2. There are plenty of hotels , but only Weisses Ross , Marktplatz 12 (tel 0 92 21/9 56 50; DM80/a?¬40-DM149/a?¬74), and Kronprinz , Fischergasse 4 (tel 0 92 21/9 21 80; DM125/a?¬63-DM249/a?¬124), are in the Altstadt. However, there's a concentration around the Stadtpark to the west of the centre: Ertl , Hardenbergstr. 3 (tel 0 92 21/97 40 00; DM80/a?¬40-DM199/a?¬99); Purucker , Melkendorfer Str. 4 (tel 0 92 21/9 02 00; DM125-149/a?¬63-74); Hansa , Weltrichstr. 2a (tel 0 92 21/6 00 90, www.hansa-hotel-kulmbach.de ; DM150/a?¬75-DM299/a?¬149); and Astron , Luitpoldstr. 2 (tel 0 92 21/60 30; DM200-249/a?¬100-124).

All the hotels around the Stadtpark have high-quality restaurants , while Kronprinz has a cafA©. Tracking down the different local beers can be a time-consuming process. A good selection is offered by the StadtschA¤nke in the Burg, but most other restaurants remain loyal to a particular label. The MA¶nchshof BrA¤uhaus, in the same complex as the Brauereimuseum, has a huge beer garden and serves the full range of MA¶nchshof and Kapuziner products; these are also available in the town centre at the StadtschA¤nke , Holzmarkt 3, which has different themed-lunch menus each day. Kulmbacher beers are served at Anno , a bistro at Marktplatz 4; EKU beers at Zunftstube , Obere Stadt 4, and the pizzeria EKU-FA¤ssle , Sutte 18. No local beer tour is complete without a visit to Kulmbacher KommunbrA¤u , GrA?nwehr 17, the town's only Hausbrauerei: it makes light and amber brews and serves hearty local dishes. Altogether different in style is a trendy French-style brasserie, Alte Feuerwache , Grabenstr. 4.

Special strong brews are served in litre measures in a huge tent set up beside the Stadthalle for the duration of the main local festival , the nine-day-long Kulmbacher Bierfest , which begins on the last Saturday of July. At the beginning of the same month is an annual folklore event, the Altstadtfest , while in the second week of August in odd-numbered years tin-figure enthusiasts descend on the town for the Zinnfiguren-BA¶rse .
