Virtually everything you're likely to want to see in IrA?klion lies within the walled city, and even here the majority falls into a relatively small sector - the northeastern corner. The most vital thoroughfare, 25-AvgoA?stou , links the harbour with the commercial city centre. At the bottom it is lined with shipping and travel agencies and rental outlets, but further up these give way to banks, restaurants and stores. PlatAa VenizAİlou (or Fountain Square), off to the right, is crowded with cafAİs and restaurants; behind VenizAİlou lies El Greco Park (actually a rather cramped garden), with more bars, while on the opposite side of 25-AvgoA?stou are some of the more interesting of IrA?klion's older buildings. Further up 25-AvgoA?stou, KalokerinoA? leads down to HaniA? Gate and westwards out of the city; straight ahead, OdhA?s-1821 is a major shopping street, and adjacent 1866 is given over to the animated market . To the left, DhikeosAnis heads for the city's main square, PlatAa EleftherAas , paralleled by the touristy pedestrian alley, DedhA?lou, the direct link between the two squares. The newly revamped EleftherAas is very much the traditional centre of the city, both for traffic - which swirls around it constantly - and for life in general; it is ringed by more expensive tourist cafAİs and restaurants and comes alive in the evening with crowds of strolling locals.
