IrA?klion airport is right on the coast, 4km east of the city. Bus #1 leaves for PlatAa EleftherAas every few minutes from the car park in front of the terminal; buy your ticket (a?¬0.55) at the booth before boarding. There are also plenty of taxis outside (which you'll be forced to use when the buses stop at 11pm), and prices to major destinations are posted here and in the domestic departures hall - it's about a?¬4 to the centre of town. Get an agreement on the fare before taking a cab and beware if the driver extols the virtues of a particular place to stay and offers to drop you there - he'll usually be getting a kickback from the proprietors. To avoid such hassles ask to be dropped at the central PlatAa EleftherAas, from where everything is in easy walking distance.

There are three main bus stations and a small terminus. Services along the coastal highway to or from the east (MA?lia, A?yios NikA?laos, IerA?petra, SitAa and so on) use the terminal just off the main road between the ferry dock and the Venetian harbour; the #2 local bus to KnossA?s runs from the city bus stop, adjacent to the east bus station. Main road services west (RA©thymnon and HaniA?) leave from a terminal close to the east bus station on the other side of the road. Buses for the southwest (FestA?s, MA?tala or AyAa GalAni) and along the inland roads west (Tylissos, AnA?yia) operate out of a terminal just outside HaniA? Gate, a very long walk from the centre along KalokerinoA? (or jump on any bus heading down this street). From the wharves where the ferries dock, the city rises directly ahead in steep tiers. If you're heading for the centre, for the archeological museum or the tourist office, cut straight up the stepped alleys behind the bus station onto DhoA?kos BofA?r and to PlatAa EleftherAas; this will take about fifteen minutes. For accommodation though, and to get a better idea of the layout of IrA?klion's main attractions, it's simplest to follow the main roads by a rather more roundabout route. Head west along the coast, past the major eastbound bus station and on by the Venetian harbour before cutting up towards the centre on 25-AvgoA?stou.
