If you're looking to get transport straight through, arrive early to make connections. The bus station (tel 07320/23 145) is nearly 1km north of the centre; follow the river, partly covered with carparks, along NA©dhondos. The Wednesday and Saturday produce market, one of the region's most colourful, is nearby, across the bridge from the bus station and alongside the road to SpA?rti. The most regular buses run north to MegalA?poli, TrApoli and Athens, and west to MessAni, KorA?ni or Pylos; the magnificent route over the TaA?yetos ridge to SpA?rti is covered twice daily, and the one to Kardhamyli, StoA?pa and A?tylo (connection to AreA?poli) four times daily.

The train station is 200m to the west of PlatAa KonstandAnou DhiadhA?khnou, on FrantzA. KalamA?ta is the railhead for trains chugging along the pretty, but slow and at times uncomfortable, route to KyparissAa (and ultimately to PA?tra, with a possible detour to Olympia) or inland even more scenically to TrApoli and A?rgos. Anyone arriving by slow train from Athens or TrApoli, and heading towards Pylos or KorA?ni by bus, could get off at AsprA?homa station (seven minutes before the main station) and catch the buses nearby, to avoid the long transfer between rail and bus terminals in KalamA?ta itself. There are three flights a week to and from Athens; tickets are sold at the airport Olympic Airways office. The airport (tel 07210/69 442) is 9km west of KalamA?ta on the highway to MessAni, Pylos and KorA?ni, and buses to these destinations pass the entrance. In season there are four charters a week from the UK, all on Sundays. The small terminal has an automatic exchange machine.

Taxis usually meet trains; otherwise there is a taxi rank on AristomA©nous and another on NavarAnou. Three rival agencies offer car rental : Maniatis, IatropoA?lou 1 (tel 07210/27 694, pelops@emporio.gr ); Agni Travel, KessA?ri 2 (tel 07210/20 352); and Stavrianos, NA©dhondos 89 (tel 07210/23 041). There are two scooter rental outlets: Bastakos (also mountain bikes) on FA?ron 190 (tel 07210/26 638), and Alpha, Vyronos 156 (tel 07210/93 423).

Most facilities, including the banks and post office , are in the streets around PlatAa KonstandAnou DhiadhA?khnou, though there is a second post office near the customs house at the seaward end of AristomA©nous. In the summer, Hobby at FA?ron 237 sells English-language newspapers and books.
