fiogf49gjkf0d The best
restaurants
in the summer months are down by the
harbour
, which has been set up as a yacht marina. From west to east:
Krini
at EvangelistrAas 40, is a neighbourhood fish-and-wine taverna open most of the year;
Pyrofani
, at a corner on the waterfront with views of the marina and the lights of the eastern villages, has a large selection of meat and vegetarian dishes and good local wine;
Katofli
on SalamAnos near the marina, has outdoor summer seating and a huge menu - unfortunately all three are accessed through a somewhat insalubrious area of abandoned warehouses and grain silos. Along the main, eastern waterfront are
Meltemi
, near the corner of NavarAnou and FA?ron, a basic
psistariA?
with tasty food;
Tabaki
, NavarAnou 91, featuring a wide menu and cheerful service; next door, the
Petrino
has a good selection of mezA©dhes. There are a couple of well-priced cafA©s directly opposite the bus station.
Only in winter does the older
centre
of town get into its culinary stride. At this time, pick from
Kannas
, LakonikAs 18, an atmospheric place with occasional live music which featured in Sheelagh Kanelli's novel,
Earth and Water
; or
Kioupi
, AlexAki 52 (off the AreA?poli road), idiosyncratically decorated and with clay-pot cooking (as the name implies). For afternoon or evening drinks, the cafA©s along the central broad PlatAa KonstandAnou DhiadhA?khnou are very pleasant, and less noisy with traffic than waterfront NavarAnou. Round the corner, the pace heats up in the
bars
along FrantzA, towards the train station. There are several
cinemas
nearby, some with family entertainment.
If you're not after a full meal, KalamA?ta has plenty of
mezedhopolAa
, the better among them serving the traditional local snack - roast pork and potatoes. Down at the harbour, the
Karamanos
ouzerA west of the waterfront branch of the post office does nice fish mezA©dhes.
