Information on Guadeloupe and its outer islands, including free, detailed Chemin Bleu road maps , is available from the main tourism office, 5 square de la Banque, across from la Darse's markets (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 8am-noon; tel 0590/82 09 30, fax 83 89 22; ). You can check email at Rapido , 42 Centre John-Perse (daily 9am-1pm & 2-5pm; a?¬3.05/15min) and send regular mail from the post office on place de l'HA?tel de Ville (Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat 7am-noon).

There's no good reason to stay in Pointe-A -Pitre, but for those getting on or off boats in the dead of night, the small but appealing rooms at the portside HA?tel St John Perse , 10 Centre John-Perse (tel 0590/82 51 57, fax 82 52 61, ; US$75-100 with breakfast) are your best option. Otherwise, the spartan Maison de la Marie-Galante , 12 place de la Victoire (tel 0590/83 87 83; US$25-50), will only do if you need a transit stay; the cheapest rooms are fan-only.

The city's few restaurants are equally lacklustre, but Le Petit Palais , 4 place de l'A?glise (Mon-Fri 6.30am-4.30pm), has pastries and coffee; Maharaja Monty , 43 rue Achille RenA©-Boisneuf, serves up quality Indian curries in a French colonial-meets-Taj Mahal setting; and nearby, La FougA?re , 34 rue Peynier, is the most attractive eatery in town, with tasty and affordable creole specials.
