City transport

City buses are frequent and extremely noisy; they're generally old US school buses, though unfortunately not painted in the glorious colours seen elsewhere in Central America. Urban routes start running at around 6am and finish around 9pm. Route names and numbers are painted on the front and fares are extremely cheap (US$0.20 anywhere within the city), though none pass very close to the Parque Central. Any bus signed "San Miguel" (including the #21) runs past the US embassy and the tourist office along Av Juan Gutemberg.

Taxis come in a range of shapes and colours, but are easy to identify by the numbers painted on their sides. They announce their availability by incessant honking and are often shared, with passengers dropped off in turn. There are no meters but a trip in the city should be around US$2, a little more at night.
