fiogf49gjkf0d Daily flights connect
Dabok Airport
(tel 0294/655453), 25km east of Udaipur, with Mumbai, Delhi, Aurangabad and Jaipur. Taxis run to the city itself for around Rs200.
Trains
from Delhi and Ahmedabad pull in at
Udaipur City Station
a little to the south of the town centre (don't get off at Udaipur Station, much further north). The
bus stand
is a few hundred metres north of here, directly opposite
Udai Pole
, the easternmost gate of the old city. The easiest way to get into town from either is to jump in a rickshaw or tonga.
The town's grand but largely ineffectual
tourist office
(Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 0294/411535) is situated well away from the main tourist sights, on the east side of the city at Surajpole, but there are also branch offices at the airport (tel 0294/655433) and City railway station (Mon-Sat 7.30-11.30am & 4-7pm).
The cheapest and most efficient places to
change money
are Thomas Cook in the City Palace compound (daily 9.30am-5.30pm; tel &fax 0294/411663), and the registered agent for American Express, TSG Tours & Travels, across town on Chetak Circle (daily 9.30am-7.30pm; tel 0294/529661). For Visa withdrawals, go to Bank of Baroda, opposite the Town Hall on Bapu Bazaar; card transactions (on the mezzanine floor upstairs) are charged at one percent. You can also change currency and travellers' cheques at the State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, Chetak Circle, and the State Bank of India, between Hathi Pol and Chetak Circle (both Mon-Fri 10am-2pm, Sat 10am-noon), but transactions take a lot longer.
Poste restante
in Udaipur is notoriously unreliable; in principle, it should be addressed to the Postmaster at Shastri Circle Post Office; however, some ends up at the GPO, just off Chetak Circle (Mon-Sat 10am-1pm & 1.30-7pm, Sun 10am-3pm). Note that
parcels
may only be posted Mon-Fri 10am-4pm & Sat 10am-1pm.
Most of the hotels listed in Accommodation offer
internet access
for Rs40-80/hr, and there are plenty of privately run STD bureaux around the Jagdish temple where you send and receive email. One of the cheapest places in town is Arena, near the Jet Airways office at Madhuban.
