Belawan Harbour serves both passenger ferries to Malaysia and local Pelni ferries to other parts of Indonesia. Tickets for the ferries to Penang in Malaysia (Rp165,000) include free transport between the harbour and the city and can be bought from the Perdana agent at Jl BI Katamso 35 (tel 061/545803), or the Bahagia agent, Sukma Tours and Travel, at Jl SM Raja 92 (tel 061/706500), one block south of the Mesjid Raya. The Pelni ships KM Sinabung and KM Kelud both call in every four days at Belawan on their way to Jakarta (42hr), and as they don't offer free transport to the city, you'll need to use the yellow "Morina" angkuta (mini-vans) #811 or #122 (Rp1500). The Pelni office is at Jl Sugiono 5 (tel 061/518899), opposite the blue BNI building (Mon-Fri 9am-3pm, Sat 8-10.30am).

When leaving Medan by bus , remember that buses to points north and west of Medan depart from Pinang Baris (DAMRI bus #2 from the tourist office, or angkuta "Koperasi" #64 from Jalan Katamso). Travellers to Berastagi , however, will find it much quicker to catch an angkuta to Padang Bulan (#60 from the Istana Plaza on Jalan RH Juanda, or #1 from the tourist office), in the southwestern corner of the city, from where buses leave every ten minutes (2hr). The Amplas terminal (angkuta "Soedarko" #3 or #4 from the tourist office) serves all other destinations.
