Banks and exchange There is an ATM for Visa, MasterCard and Cirrus next to Casa Luna restaurant on Jl Raya, central Ubud, and a couple of other ATMs for MasterCard and Cirrus further east along Jl Raya. Visa cash advance is available Mon-Fri 8am-1pm from Bank Danamon on Jl Raya. Numerous tour agents on Jl Raya and Monkey Forest Rd offer currency exchange services.

Bookshops English-language books at Ary's Bookshop, Jl Raya and Ganesha Bookshop, Jl Raya. Ganesha also stocks secondhand books, as does Rona Bookshop, Jl Sukma 23 in Peliatan.

Cultural courses Balinese cooking (Rp100,000) at Casa Luna restaurant, Jl Raya (every Mon, Tues & Wed); and Bumbu restaurant, Jl Kajeng (on demand). Batik courses at Crackpot Batik, Monkey Forest Road; Sai2, Monkey Forest Road; and Ubud Batik Centre, Jl Gautama. Music workshops at Ganesha Bookshop, Jl Raya (Tues 6pm); traditional music and dance lessons at Sehati, southeast off the far southern end of Monkey Forest Road (Rp25,000/hr).

Internet access At least a dozen places, including Bali 3000 on Jl Raya (daily 9am-11pm; Rp4000/15min); Roda Tourist Services at Jl Bisma 3 (daily 9am-9pm; Rp5000/15min), and Pondok Pekak Library and Resource Centre on the east side of the football field, off Jl Dewi Sita (Mon-Sat 9am-9pm, Sun 9am-3pm; Rp3000/15min).

Hospitals and clinics For minor casualties go to the Legian Medical Clinic 5 on Monkey Forest Rd (tel 0361/976457), or to the Ubud Clinic near the Pura Gunung Lebah on Jl Raya Campuhan (tel 0361/974911). Both clinics open 24 hours, are staffed by English-speaking doctors, and will respond to emergency call-outs. For anything more serious, the nearest hospitals are in Denpasar .

Pharmacies The two central Ubud branches of Ubud Farma on Jl Raya and Monkey Forest Road (daily 8am-9pm) are staffed by helpful English-speaking pharmacists.

Police The police station is on the eastern edge of town, on Jl Tegalalang.

Post office Poste restante (Mon-Thurs 8am-4pm, Fri 8am-2pm, Sat 8am-4pm) at the GPO on Jl Jembawan.

Telephone services The Kantor Telcom (with Home Direct public phone) is at the eastern end of Jl Raya; similar rates at Nomad wartel on Jl Raya (24hr), and Wartel Pertiwi on central Monkey Forest Rd (daily 8.15am-8.45pm). Home Direct phones also outside the GPO and in the central marketplace. Phone cards from the tourist office, Kantor Telcom, and the moneychanger above Ubud Bookshop. All email places also offer fax services.
