Batik courses The Via Via CafAŠ on Jl Prawirotaman runs a one-day batik course for Rp30,000, and a one-week course for US$150. At the entrance to the Taman Sari, Dr Hadjir Digdodarmodjo (tel 0274/377835), runs a more serious three- to five-day course (from US$25 for three days).

Bookshops The Lucky Boomerang at Jl Sosro Gang I/67 stocks English-language novels and books on Indonesia; also try Gramedia Bookshop in the Malioboro shopping centre.

Cookery courses The Via Via CafAŠ on Jl Prawirotaman runs afternoon courses (Rp30,000).

Dance and gamelan courses Mrs Tia of the Ndalem Pujokusirman school at Jl Brig Jen Katamso 45 (tel 0274/371271) invites foreigners to join her 2hr group dance lessons beginning at 4pm. At the northern end of the same street, the Puriwisata (tel 0274/374089) holds Javanese dance courses for Rp50,000 per 3hr session. They also run a school for gamelan (Rp50,000 per session). The Via Via CafAŠ on Jl Prawirotaman runs intensive one-week courses for US$150.

Internet access Most of the Internet places around Jl Sosro are way overpriced (Rp15,000 per hour). You're better off visiting either the Wasantara-Net in the GPO (Mon-Sat 8am-9pm, Sun 9am-8pm; Rp45000 for 30min); or, the best in town, Pointers at Jl Mangkubumi 73, which charges the same, but has much better, faster equipment. Opposite the western end of Jl Prawirotaman, on Jl Parangtritis, Uninet also charges Rp4500 per hour.

Language courses Puri (tel 0274/583789), just to the east of the RRI auditorium at the Kompleks Kolombo 4 on Jl Cendrawasih, offers a two-week intensive course for US$390 (payable in dollars only), or a 10hr version for US$30. Puri Bahasa Indonesia (tel 0274/588192) at Jl Bausasran 59, two blocks east of Jl Malioboro, runs similar language courses (Rp15,000-25,000). The Via Via CafAŠ on Jl Prawirotaman holds a 3hr course for Rp20,000. The Wisma Bahasa, Jl Rajawali Gang Nuri 6 (tel 0274/520341) does a 30hr "travellers" course over five days (US$100).

Hospitals and clinics The Gading Clinic, south of the Alun-alun Selatan at Jl Maj Jen Panjaitan 25, has English-speaking doctors (tel 0274/375396). Yogya's main hospital is in Bethes Da, Jl Sudirman 81 (tel 0274/81774).

Immigration office Jl Adisucipto Km10, on the way to the airport near the Ambarrukmo Palace hotel (Mon-Thurs 8am-2pm, Fri 8-11am, Sat 8am-1pm; tel 0274/514948).

Massage and massage courses Gabriel at Anna's Restaurant provides a highly-recommended traditional Javanese one-hour massage for Rp30,000. They also run courses, charging Rp350,000 for four days, or Rp200,000 for two days (3hr per day). The Via Via cafAŠ also offers a traditional massage as part of their tour to a herb market and jamu traditional medicine factory (Rp30,000).

Post office Jl Senopati 2, at the southern end of Jl Malioboro (Mon-Sat 7am-9pm, Sun 8am-8pm). The parcel office is on Jl Maj Jen Suryotomo (Mon-Sat 8am-3pm, Sun 9am-2pm).

Telephone services The main Telkom office at Jl Yos Sudarso 9 is open 24hr and has Home Direct phones too. There's a wartel office at no. 30 Jl Sosro and another on Jl Parangtritis, south of Jl Prawirotaman Gang II.
