There are direct bus connections between Ennis and Shannon Airport , which is thirteen miles away in the south of the county and is the major airport on the west coast, with flights to Dublin, the UK, Europe and the US. The bus (tel 065/682 4177; if closed, phone the office in Limerick) and the train stations (tel 065/684 0444) sit alongside one another, a ten-minute walk from the town centre - follow Station Road, which runs off O'Connell Street from beside the cathedral. The very helpful tourist office is tucked away on Arthur's Row, signposted off O'Connell Street near the Daniel O'Connell monument (May & Oct Mon-Sat 9.30am-1pm & 2-5.30pm; June-Sept Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat & Sun 9am-1pm & 2-6pm; Nov Mon-Fri 9.30am-1pm & 2-5.30pm; tel 065/682 8366).

For a small town, Ennis has a good range of accommodation . The following should be a good starting point, and the tourist office can direct you to many more.

The Abbey Tourist Hostel , Harmony Row (tel 065/682 2620). This large and well-run hostel is situated in a prime location, just across the river from the Friary. Private rooms (under ?26/€33.01) are also available.

Avonlea , Francis St (tel 065/682 1632). A pleasant B&B which is only a short walk from the town centre. All rooms are en suite. ?33-40/€41.90-50.79.

Cloneen , Clon Rd (tel 065/682 9681) A welcoming B&B that's just a five-minute walk from Ennis, offering standard and en-suite accommodation in a comfortable non-smoking house. ?33-40/€41.90-50.79.

Glenfarne , 10 Ard Aoibhinn, Clare Rd (tel 065/684 4922). Comfortable B&B in a family home in a quiet cul-de-sac off the Ennis to Limerick road, about half a mile out of town. TV and tea- and coffee-making facilities in each room. Closed November to February. ?33-40/€41.90-50.79.

Newpark House , Tulla Rd (tel 065/682 1233, newparkhouse@tinet.ie ). Located about half a mile out of Ennis on the R352, turn right opposite the Roselevan Arms . A welcoming B&B in a striking seventeeth-century mansion set in wooded grounds. ?55-70/€69.84-88.88.

Old Ground Hotel , O'Connell St (tel 065/682 8127, oghotel@iol.ie ). This is one of Ennis's oldest hotels and has a beautiful ivy-clad entrance, pleasant gardens and plenty of traditional character. The rooms have been recently refurbished, and there's an elegant dining room and a welcoming bar. Good weekend rates are available too. ?110-130/€139.67-165.07.

Rockfield , Station Rd (tel 065/682 4749). A decent budget B&B in a central location, a short walk from Ennis cathedral, offering some en-suite rooms and some with shared bathrooms. ?26-33/€33.01-41.90.

The Temple Gate Hotel , Arthur's Bow, The Square (tel 065/682 3300, templegh@iol.ie ). A comfortable, new town-centre hotel which is styled around the gothic architecture of the old convent it partially occupies. All rooms have TV, tea- and coffee-making facilities and are en suite. ?90-110/€114.28-139.67.
