The train station (tel 056/22024) lies just off the north road out of the city on Dublin Street. Bus A?ireann services (tel 056/64933) depart from both the train station and Patrick Street; privately operated buses generally depart from The Parade outside Kilkenny Castle. Note that in Irish the city is called Cill Chainnigh , and this is what it says on the front of buses. You can get free maps of the city and plenty of other information from the tourist office in Rose Inn St (May & June Mon-Sat 9am-6pm; July & Aug Mon-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 11am-1pm & 2-5pm; Sept 9am-6pm, Sun 11am-1pm & 2-5pm; Oct-April Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; tel 056/51500).

Kilkenny is well served by B&Bs , although in the summer the city gets crowded, and at festival time you'll need to book in advance. Tree Grove Campsite (mid-Nov to Feb by prior arrangement only; tel 056/70302), about a mile south out of town along the R700, is a well-equipped and well-run site if you want to camp .

Berkley House , 5 Patrick St (tel 056/64848). Comfortable guesthouse in generously proportioned period town house, right in the centre of town. All rooms are en suite with TV and tea and coffee making facilities. A?70-90/a?¬88.88-114.28.

Blanchville House (tel 056/27197, www.blanchville.ie ). Fine Georgian house set in rich farmland, about five miles east out of town. Comfortable rooms with private bathrooms also offer lovely views of the surrounding countryside. There's a tennis court and billiard room for guests to use. Bregagh Guesthouse , Dean St (tel 056/22315). Large, detached family house set back from the road, right in the town centre. All rooms are en suite. A?40-55/a?¬50.79-69.84.

Celtic House , 18 Michael St (tel 056/62249). Beautifully decorated, spic and span B&B offering spacious rooms, all of which are en suite. Quiet location, yet only five minutes walk from the town centre. A?40-55/a?¬50.79-69.84.

Danville House , New Ross Rd (tel 056/21512) A delightful eighteenth-century mansion set in beautiful gardens of grassy lawns and mature trees; located about one mile south of town along the R700 and next door to the Tree Grove Campsite. The house is full of interesting antiques and the rooms are pleasant and airy. A?33-40/a?¬41.90-50.79.

Dunroamin , Dublin Rd (tel 056/61387). Wonderfully welcoming B&B in a nineteenth-century family home. All rooms are en suite. A?40-55/a?¬50.79-69.84.

Foulksrath Castle , Jenkinstown (tel 056/67674). An A?ige hostel located eight miles north of town along the N77. Buggy's buses run from Kilkenny Castle to Jenkinstown; call Buggy's for timetable details (tel 056/41264) or ask at the tourist office. The setting - a sixteenth-century fort in lush meadows - makes up for the inconvenience of getting out here. Dorm-room accommodation only is available.

Kilkenny River Court Hotel , John St (tel 056/23388, www.kilrivercourt.com ). Comfortable, traditionally styled accommodation, superbly situated on the banks of the river; some of the deluxe rooms have views of the castle. Facilities include pool, gym and riverside bar. Over A?130/a?¬165.07.

Kilkenny Tourist Hostel , 35 Parliament St (tel 056/63541, http://homepage.eircom.net/~kilkennyhostel/ ). Right in the town centre and run by a friendly crowd, this IHH hostel is by far the nicest budget accommodation in town. There's a bright, airy kitchen and sitting room; clean and spacious dorms and private rooms (under A?26/a?¬33.01) are available.

Majella , Waterford Rd (tel 056/21129). Welcoming B&B in a modern bungalow about half a mile from the city centre. Good breakfasts, pleasant interiors and non-smoking rooms are available. Open May-Oct. A?33-40/a?¬41.90-50.79.
