When it comes to pubs , Sligo does well. Hargadon's on O'Connell Street is one of the most enjoyable places to drink and talk. An exclusively male establishment until the early 1980s, it's a fine old pub, with dark recesses and shut-off rooms, and shelves of nineteenth-century earthenware stout jugs. Note the little swivel windows at the far end of the serving bar, where the whiskey could be slipped through with little fuss by either drinker or landlord. Shoot the Crows , Castle Street, is a lively bar for an interesting pint, just opposite the Lady of Erin statue.

Furey's , a characterful bar in Bridge Street, is the best spot for traditional music , with sessions three or four nights a week plus jazz on Wednesdays. Early's , also on Bridge Street is another lively spot (traditional music on Thursdays), while TD's on Adelaide Street and The Leitrim Bar , across the river on The Mall, both have something happening most nights throughout the year. McLoughlin's in Market Street generally has music on a Tuesday, along with impromptu sessions at other times. The Clarence Hotel on Wine Street has a live band (Fri & Sat) and a dance floor. Check The Sligo Champion for details of other pubs with live music; alternatively The Sligo Weekender is a useful free paper with entertainment listings (out on Friday) as is Sligo's Monthly Gig Guide , both available in shops and the main tourist office. The big nightclub in town is Toff's at the Embassy Rooms, John F. Kennedy Parade (Thurs-Sun). Equinox on Teeling Street also has discos (Wed-Sun 11pm-1.30am).

The Hawk's Well theatre on Lower Quay Street (tel 071/61518) stages both amateur and professional drama, and also has musicals and classical music concerts, particularly during the Yeats International Summer School (August) and the Sligo Arts Festival (May). It's also worth checking to see what's on at The Factory Theatre, Lower Gill Street (tel 071/70431; www.blueraincoat.com ), which is home to the movement-based Blue Raincoat Theatre Company; it also acts as a performance space for other cultural events.
