Trains arrive some way out of the centre, but regular buses connect the station to the port. Buses arrive in Via Catalogna, on the Giardino PA?bblico. Alghero's efficient tourist office (May-Sept Mon-Sat 8am-8pm, Sun 9am-1pm; Oct-April Mon-Sat 8am-2pm; tel 079.979.054) is at the top end of the Giardino PA?bblico, its multilingual staff equipped with reams of maps, accommodation lists and tour details.

Alghero's best-value hotel , and the only one located in the old town, is the San Francesco , at Via Machin 2 (tel 079.980.330; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47), just behind San Francesco church, with all of its clean and quiet rooms en suite. If it's full, try the very basic but clean Normandie , an apartment on Via Enrico Mattei, south of the old town, between Via Kennedy and Via Giovanni XXIII (tel 079.975.302; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48), or the San Giuan , a modern holiday villa with bland, airy rooms, located north of the centre and near the beaches at Via Angioy 2 (tel 079.951.222; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47). Two kilometres out of town, La Mariposacampsite (tel 079.950.360; April to mid-Oct) has direct access to the beach. Alghero's Giulianiyouth hostel (tel 079.930.353; L14,000/a?¬7.28) is actually 6km along the coast at FERTILIA , reachable by local bus, but call first to check availability.

A good way to get around the town and its environs is by bike : Cicloexpress, off Via Garibaldi at the port, charge L50,000/a?¬25.82 per day for a scooter, L20,000/a?¬10.33 for a mountain bike, and L15,000/a?¬7.80 for a regular bicycle.
