Ferries leave from the Stazione MarAttima, a couple of kilometres (bus #1 or #1/4) north of the train station, close to the centre of town. The tourist office here (mid-June to mid-Sept daily 8am-8pm; tel 071.201.183) has timetables, and each of the main ferry lines has a ticket office (closed at lunchtime) - you can also buy tickets from the agencies all around the port. The main lines are Strintzis (tel 071.207.3992 or 071.207.1068), who go to Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras in Greece and Minoan (tel 071.201.708 and 071.56.789), and Superfast (tel 071.207.0240, 071.207.0282 and 071.207.0283, www.superfast.com ) who sail to Igoumenitsa and Patras. There's also Jadrolinija (tel 071.204.305, www.jadrolinkija.tel.hr/jadrolinija ) and Adriatica di Navigazione (tel 071.204.915, www.adriatica.it ) who sail to Croatia and the Dalmatian islands.

Charges on ferry lines depend on the speed of the crossing, with one-way fares starting at around L80,000/a?¬41.32 per person to Croatia, if you are taking a car add another L80-90,000/a?¬41,32-46,48. For the nineteen-hour journey to Patras in July and August, reckon on paying L167,000/a?¬86.25 for an aircraft-style seat for the crossing (cabins are available) with Superfast; add L182,000/a?¬93.99 for a car. There are no discounts for holders of InterRail and Eurail passes but outside high season prices drop by 25-30 percent, and there are 30 percent discounts on return journeys. You should book in advance, and you should always aim to arrive at the Stazione MarAttima a couple of hours before your ferry is due to depart
