The tourist office is just within the easternmost ambit of the town walls, at Largo Corona d'Italia 35 (Mon-Sat 9am-12.30pm & 2-5pm, Sat 9am-12.30pm; tel 0424.524.351), their free magazine called Bassano News gives up-to-date information about the city's facilities and events. The train station is just beyond, across the busy main road.

For accommodation , there's only one hotel actually in the old centre, Al Castello , Piazza Terraglio, 19 (tel 0424.228665; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47), right by the castle. The other hotels are a short distance out, though the Belvedere , on the main Viale delle Fosse, just east of the walls (tel 0424.529.845, www.bonotto.it ; L150,000-200,000/a?¬77.47-103.29), and the Victoria , at Viale Diaz 33, just across the Ponte Nuovo, on the west bank of the Brenta (tel 0424.503.620, victoriahotel@pn.itnet.it ; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47), are within easily walkable distance of the centre and are just as good. Otherwise, there's a hostel, Istituto Cremona , Via Chini 6 (tel 0424.522.032; L15,000/a?¬7.75), and the inexpensive Alla Favorita , Via S. Giorgio 11 (tel 0424.502.030; L90,000-120,000/a?¬46.48-61.98), which is a good fifteen minutes from the centre, west across the river, beyond Piazza Santa Trinita.

As for food , the Antica Osteria , Via Matteotti 7 (closed Mon), has good bar snacks, while the old-fashioned Trattoria del Borgo , Via Margnan 7, which has a garden, and El Piron , Via Z. Bricito 12 (closed Sat), are recommended for a full meal, at around L30,000/a?¬15.49.
