The train station is on Piazzale Vittorio Veneto, on the northern edge of town, a short walk from Piazza Cavour and the centre. FS services (information tel 1478.88.088) from here run to Manfredonia, while Ferrovie del Gargano (FG; toll-free information, tel 167.296.247; office to the left of the station entrance) trains go to PA©schici Calenella. If you can stand getting to the station for 6am there's a combined train and ferry service (originating in Bari) that goes from FA?ggia straight through to the TrA©miti islands .Tickets have to be bought from the station by 5pm the preceeding day. SITA buses , which serve the whole region, arrive at and depart from just outside the train station; their ticket office (tel 0881.773.117 or 0881.773.425) is under the porticoes opposite the station; when this is closed, buy tickets at the Kiwi Bar , on the corner of Viale XXIV Maggio. There are also Ferrovie del Gargano buses to Manfredonia and Vieste. The tourist office (Mon-Fri 8.30am-1.30pm; tel 0881.723.650), a 15-20min walk into town, on the first floor at Via E. Perrone 17, off Piazzale Puglia, has a lot of good information on the province as a whole. If you are headed for the Gargano, Tutto Gargano (L5000/a?¬2.58 from newsstands or free from the tourist office) is a great resource for accommodation and information on festivals and events; check out its site at www.tuttogargano.com too. For onward travel, there's a CTS office selling train, bus and air tickets with reductions for under-26s at Via Tugini 62 (Mon-Fri 9am-1pm & 5-8pm; tel 0881.708.269)

Staying in FA?ggia is not a desperately attractive option; there are several rather run-down hotels near the station, but most are uninspiring and not particularly cheap; better bets are the recently renovated Hotel Venezia , Via Piave 40 (tel 0881.770.903; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48), down Viale XXIV Maggio from the station, then third right. Hotel Europa , Via Monfalcone 52 (tel 0881.721.057, www.italiaabc.com ; L200,000-250,000/a?¬103.29-129.11), is more upmarket with smart rooms and helpful staff - again it's down Viale XXIV Maggio from the station, then second right. The grandest place in town is Cicolella , at Viale XXIV Maggio 60 (tel 0881.688.890; L300,000-400,000/a?¬154.94-206.58), a businesslike hotel clad in black marble and cherry wood dating back to the early 1900s and offering attentive service. The only time that bed space will be short is at the beginning of May, during the Fiera di FA?ggia - one of Italy's oldest fairs, although today simply a huge international agricultural affair held on the outskirts of the town.

There are several good food options: try Il Rugantino , Via Luigi Sturzo 23 (closed Mon), head down Corso Roma and turn left at the sanitorium - which offers great pizzas and other dishes; Osteria Chacaito , Via Arpi 62 (closed Sun), a typically Foggiese osteria with excellent wines near the Museo Civico; or spend a little more at Da Pompeo , Vico al Piano 14 (closed Sun), down Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and right at the Palazzo Vescovile - a good place to indulge in Pugliesi specialities. There is also a very good pizzeria a few steps from Piazza d'Italia and Corso Roma on Via Bari called Le Arcate , which doesn't look promising from the outside but which has a bright, modern interior and a fantastic inexpensive antipasti buffet as well as excellent cripsy pizzas.
