You shouldn't have any problem staying in Gubbio, though the place does get busy, and many of the hotels and restaurants are rather smart affairs aimed at well-heeled Italians. Check for cheap rooms in private houses with the tourist office , Piazza Odersi 6 (Mon-Sat 8.30am-1.30pm & 3-6pm, Sun 9.30am-12.30pm; tel 075.922.0790 or 075.922.0693, info@iat.gubbio.pg.it ). You can check your email , at the CaffA? Centrale , Piazza Oderisi 3 (7am-midnight; closed Mon; L10,000/a?¬5.17 per hr; 075.922.2518, www.seguceo.net ) near the bottom of Corso Garibaldi. For hotel accommodation, try the straightforward one-star Galletti , Via Piccardi 1 (tel 075.927.7753; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48) with just seven rooms; the reliable two-star Grotta dell'Angelo , Via Gioia 47 (tel 075.927.1747, fax 075.927.3438; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48); or the popular and perfectly placed Albergo dei Consoli at Via dei Consoli 59 (tel 075.927.3335; L60,000-90,000/a?¬30.99-46.48) - though the nine rooms here are extremely plain. Moving up a notch, the spacious Gattapone , Via G. Ansidei 6 (tel 075.927.2489, fax 075.927.2417; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47) with its peaceful garden is the best mid-range choice, while if you want a taste of a medieval palace with frescoed ceilings and lots of antiques, treat yourself to the three-star Bosone , Via XX Settembre 22 (tel 075.922.0688, fax 075.922.0552; L120,000-150,000/a?¬61.98-77.47). For luxury, opt for the Park Hotel ai Cappuccini , Via Tifernate (tel 075.92.34, fax 075.922.0323; L250,000-300,000/a?¬129.11-154.94) - an elegantly converted fourteenth-century monastery in parkland just outside of town, featuring a pool, gym, sauna and garden. Less than 2km south of town, the CittA  di Gubbio campsite (tel & fax 075.927.2037; April-Sept) is in a pleasant setting and has a swimming pool.

Gubbio boasts a good selection of restaurants , including the smart Taverna del Lupo (closed Mon) at Via Ansidei 21, well worth a splurge for its classic Umbrian dishes and excellent truffle risotto; the much cheaper Grotta dell'Angelo (closed Tues), annexed to the Grotta dell'Angelo hotel, does very good basic meals in its wonderful dining room; and, if you want to dine outdoors, head for the Bosone Garden restaurant (closed Wed) on Via Mastro Giorgio, attached to the Bosone hotel. The best of the many cheap pizzerias is Il Bargello (closed Mon), Via dei Consoli 37.
